Glenn Renwick, originally from Dunedin, has tragically passed away in a car accident in Florida.

Renwick, 69, attended schools in Dunedin before his family relocated to Christchurch. He went on to study mathematics and economics at the University of Canterbury, followed by a master’s degree in industrial and systems engineering at the University of Florida.

Renwick was a successful figure in the American insurance industry, with two properties in Wānaka and a reported net worth of at least $115 million as of 2022.

During his career, Renwick worked at Bell Labs before joining Progressive, where he spent 32 years and served as the chief executive for half of that time. Under his leadership, Progressive grew from generating hundreds of millions in revenue to $US50 billion, making him one of the few New Zealanders to lead a Fortune 500 company.

Renwick was recognized for his achievements and was twice included in Forbes’ list of most admired CEOs worldwide. He also served on the boards of Fiserv and United Health.

Progressive confirmed Renwick’s passing on Friday, May 16. His successor, Tricia Griffith, praised him as an exceptional leader who strived to leave the company in a better state than he found it.

Rest in peace, Glenn Renwick.
