Sylndr Raises $15.7 Million to Expand Its Footprint in the Egyptian Automotive Market

Sylndr, a Cairo-based company that initially focused on online used car sales, has secured a significant investment of $15.7 million as it looks to diversify into auto financing, servicing, and tools for dealers. The funding round was led by Development Partners International’s Nclude Fund.

Founded by Omar El Defrawy in 2021, Sylndr has quickly established itself in Egypt’s rapidly growing but under-digitized vehicle market. The latest funding round includes fresh equity and previously undisclosed seed financing, bringing the total amount raised by the company to over $30 million.

In addition to the equity funding, Sylndr has also secured nearly $10 million in debt financing from local banks over the past year. This capital injection will support the company’s expansion efforts as it continues to innovate and disrupt the automotive industry in Egypt.

Evolving Into a Broader Mobility Platform

Initially focused on buying and selling used cars directly from consumers, Sylndr has evolved into a comprehensive mobility platform that offers digital auto loans, car servicing, and a marketplace for third-party dealers. This strategic shift reflects the company’s commitment to addressing the diverse needs of customers in the Egyptian automotive market.

CEO Omar El Defrawy explained, “The market is much bigger than buying and selling cars. We are focused on creating value for customers by building compelling businesses that integrate with our core operations.”

With over 6 million cars on the road in Egypt, the demand for used cars has been steadily increasing due to currency devaluation and rising prices for new imports. Sylndr aims to capitalize on this market opportunity by formalizing processes around inspections, pricing, financing, and ownership transfers.

Capturing the Market Through Innovation

Sylndr’s expansion beyond car sales includes three new verticals to reduce its dependence on inventory and capital. Sylndr Swift provides digital automotive financing that connects buyers with banks and underwriters, offering financing approvals in under 10 minutes.

In addition to Swift, Sylndr Plus offers inspections, maintenance, and servicing for cars sold on its platform. The third vertical, Al-Ajans, is a dealer-to-consumer marketplace that enables third-party dealers to list and sell cars with Sylndr handling inspections, ownership transfers, and payments.

By integrating these verticals into a single mobile app, Sylndr aims to provide a seamless experience for buying, financing, and managing car ownership. This innovative approach has positioned the company as a market leader in Egypt’s automotive industry.

Forging Ahead in the Egyptian Market

Unlike other startups that have used Egypt as a stepping stone to expand into the Gulf region, Sylndr is focused on deepening its presence in Egypt. CEO Omar El Defrawy emphasized that the company is the largest used car trading company in Egypt by volume and value.

Ashley Lewis, Managing Partner at DPI Venture Capital, praised Sylndr for its innovative approach to digitizing the Egyptian automotive market. The company’s integrated model brings together commerce, credit, and technology to revolutionize how Egyptians buy and sell cars.

With the support of various VC firms, including Algebra Ventures, Nuwa Capital, and Raed Ventures, Sylndr is well-positioned to continue its growth trajectory and solidify its position as a key player in Egypt’s automotive industry.
