Thomas Trum: The Artist Redefining Painting Techniques

When it comes to creating art, Thomas Trum is not just interested in the finished product, but also in the methods and tools artists use to apply their medium to a surface. Trum, who started his artistic journey in graffiti around 2008, quickly realized that traditional tools like paintbrushes and spray cans had limitations. This led him to experiment with different techniques and tools to achieve a new level of precision and efficiency in his work.

Trum’s fascination with innovation and efficiency in art led him to start creating his own machines that could assist in applying color to large surfaces with intricate detail. By 2014, he shifted his focus to monochrome paintings, honing his skills in creating shapes and working exclusively with lines. His work often involves using handmade machines to apply fields or lines of color to canvases, walls, and even floors, resulting in mesmerizing geometric patterns and gradients.

The transparency of the paint in Trum’s work reveals the numerous layers and meticulous preparations required to complete a piece in one attempt. His monumental works often require a small team with different strengths to bring each project to life. One of his recent collaborations with Porsche, titled “The Art of Dreams,” involved transferring his vibrant geometric motifs to boat sails, a pool, and a series of large-scale canvases.

Currently, Trum is working on a project that incorporates video and photography to capture the element of motion in his work. This project will be presented in the spring at the Gerhard Hofland Gallery in Amsterdam. To see more of Trum’s work, visit his website and follow him on Instagram for updates.
