Cooper Koch, known for his role as Erik Menendez in “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” recently shared his thoughts on the resentencing of the Menendez brothers. Following a decision by a Los Angeles judge to reduce their life sentences, Koch had a conversation with Erik Menendez himself, who expressed excitement about the news.

During a “Monsters” FYC event, Koch revealed that Erik Menendez is looking forward to making a difference in the prison system once he is released. He plans to advocate for others serving life without parole and work towards reforming the system. Koch found Menendez’s commitment to creating positive change inspiring and described it as a beautiful thing.

Erik Menendez envisions a future where people will look back and recognize the decision to release him and his brother as the right one. The recent ruling allows them a chance at parole after serving 35 years for the murder of their parents in 1989. Judge Michael Jesic reduced their original sentences to 50 years to life, citing California’s Youthful Offender law for offenders under the age of 26 at the time of their crime.

The public interest in the case was reignited after the release of Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters” series in September 2024. District Attorney George Gascón supported reducing the brothers’ sentences, believing they had been rehabilitated during their time in prison. However, his successor, Nathan Hochman, withdrew the request for resentencing, arguing that the brothers had not taken responsibility for their actions.

Koch, who visited the Menendez brothers in prison with Kim Kardashian, spoke highly of their character and the work they have done behind bars. Erik teaches meditation and speech classes, while they both participate in a project to improve the prison grounds. Koch emphasized the positive impact they have had on their environment during their incarceration.

Reflecting on his interactions with Erik Menendez, Koch shared that they first spoke the night before “Monsters” premiered on Netflix. The actor was struck by Menendez’s kindness and the genuine connection they shared during their conversation.

Overall, the resentencing of the Menendez brothers has sparked a mix of reactions from different parties involved in the case. As they await a decision from the state parole board, the brothers remain hopeful for a chance at freedom and a new chapter in their lives.
