Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his Make America Healthy Again commission are facing a crucial deadline set by the White House this week. The commission is tasked with delivering a comprehensive diagnosis of the nation’s epidemic of chronic diseases and proposing solutions by the end of the summer.

One of the key challenges for the commission is determining its priorities. Should they focus solely on combating obesity, the fastest-rising condition in the country? Or should they target the sickest regions or address common risk factors that contribute to multiple diseases? While it may seem logical to prioritize conditions that have the highest economic impact, it is also essential to allocate resources to long-neglected disease prevention efforts.

To provide a foundation for decision-making, STAT has conducted an in-depth analysis of publicly available health data to establish a baseline of chronic disease prevalence in the U.S. Despite the challenges in obtaining timely and comprehensive data on the costs and prevalence of chronic illnesses, STAT’s investigation has generated novel data points using the annual Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

Based on this analysis, STAT has outlined nine different sets of priorities for the public and the commission to consider. These priorities cover a wide range of diseases and their consequences, giving stakeholders the opportunity to determine which issues they believe are the most critical and, consequently, which solutions should be prioritized.

While the full details of the analysis and proposed priorities are available exclusively to STAT+ subscribers, the overarching goal of the commission remains clear: to address the nation’s epidemic of chronic diseases and improve the overall health of Americans. By leveraging data-driven insights and engaging in informed decision-making, the commission aims to make significant strides in combating the challenges posed by chronic illnesses in the country.

In conclusion, the Make America Healthy Again commission faces a pivotal moment in its mission to tackle chronic diseases. With a deadline looming and a diverse set of priorities to consider, the commission must navigate complex terrain to deliver effective solutions that will have a meaningful impact on the health and well-being of the nation.
