Your guide to what Trump’s second term means for Washington, business and the world

The Pentagon has officially accepted a $400 million luxury jumbo jet gifted by Qatar, which is intended to be used as the US president’s plane. Despite concerns from both Democrats and Republicans about ethics and security, Donald Trump has expressed his desire for the aircraft to serve as Air Force One while Boeing works on completing two new jets that have been long delayed.

Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated on Wednesday, “The Secretary of Defense has accepted a Boeing 747 from Qatar in accordance with all federal rules and regulations. The Department of Defense will work to ensure proper security measures and functional-mission requirements are considered for an aircraft used to transport the President of the United States.”

An Air Force spokesperson confirmed that they are preparing to award a contract to modify the Boeing 747 for executive airlift, with details of the contract being classified. The process of retrofitting the plane is expected to take some time.

Criticism from Democrats has been strong, with US congresswoman Kelly Morrison calling the gift “corruption in plain sight.” Senator Tammy Duckworth expressed concerns about operational security risks associated with accepting a gift from a foreign government, while Senator Mazie Hirono accused Trump of using the Department of Defense to accept an impermissible gift.

Some Republicans have also voiced their concerns, with Senator Susan Collins describing the transaction as having political espionage, ethical, and constitutional problems.

Trump, however, defended the acceptance of the Boeing 747, stating during a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa that it was a beneficial gift for the United States Air Force. He emphasized that the plane was not given to him personally but to the Air Force to assist in their operations.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani defended his government’s actions, stating that the gift was not intended as a bribe and was a normal gesture between allies.

It is clear that the acceptance of the luxury jumbo jet has sparked controversy and debate, with concerns about security, ethics, and constitutional implications. The process of modifying the plane for executive airlift will be closely monitored, as the US government navigates the complexities of accepting such a significant gift from a foreign ally.
