A suspected mail thief who made a daring escape by jumping from a third-floor apartment window to evade Chicago police officers last February has been sentenced to two years of probation. Jamal Campbell, 31, pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and escape by a felon in exchange for the lenient sentence handed down by Judge Maria Kuriakos-Ciesil. In addition to probation, Campbell was also ordered to perform 100 hours of community service.

The incident unfolded on February 4, 2024, when Chicago police responded to reports of a man seen entering residential buildings on the 1200 block of West 54th Street. Witnesses reported seeing the man using a postal service master key to access mailboxes in the area. Officers quickly located Campbell in the vestibule of a building, where he was caught sorting through mail from an open mailbox.

Upon being confronted by the police, Campbell fled to the third floor of the building. Officers heard a loud banging noise and the sound of breaking glass as Campbell kicked in the door of a vacant apartment and leaped from a bedroom window in an attempt to escape. Despite sustaining serious injuries from the fall, Campbell was apprehended by the officers.

A subsequent search of the apartment revealed a black bag containing a postal service master key and a bundle of mail, further incriminating Campbell in the theft. He was hospitalized for his injuries following the incident.

In a surprising turn of events, prosecutors dropped a third case against Campbell involving illegal possession of debit cards and identity theft during his court appearance on Wednesday.

The original reporting on this incident was made possible by the readers of CWBChicago, a local news outlet dedicated to providing accurate and detailed public safety reporting in Chicago. The platform was created in 2013 by residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who were dissatisfied with the quality of information presented at local Community Policing meetings. Since then, CWBChicago has expanded its coverage area to include neighborhoods like Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side areas while remaining committed to its mission of delivering original reporting with better context and depth than mainstream media outlets.
