Nature abhors a vacuum, and so does geopolitics. As the US, under the leadership of Donald Trump, steps back from the global stage in addressing climate change, the opportunity for leadership in this crucial area is up for grabs. China, with its vast economic power and growing influence, stands poised to take on the mantle of climate leadership, with President Xi Jinping at the helm.

China’s track record on climate action is a complex one. While the nation has been the largest emitter of greenhouse gases since 2006 due to rapid industrialization, it has also made significant strides in renewable energy, particularly in the production of solar panels. President Xi, however, has been relatively reserved in his participation on the global climate stage, notably skipping COP climate summits since 2015.

Recent developments suggest a potential shift in China’s climate strategy. Reports indicate that China’s emissions may have peaked, and there are indications that President Xi is planning to attend COP30 in Belém, Brazil later this year. This sets the stage for a possible major climate announcement from China, signaling a new chapter in its climate policy.

The most anticipated move from China would be the announcement of an interim emissions reduction target, possibly aiming for specific cuts by 2040 on the path to carbon neutrality by 2060. However, to truly claim the title of global climate leader, China could go a step further by committing to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. This bold step would not only align China with the targets set by other leading nations but also set a precedent for early industrializers to take proactive measures in reducing emissions.

While the likelihood of China adopting the 2050 net-zero target remains uncertain, the upcoming COP30 summit presents a crucial opportunity for President Xi to demonstrate China’s commitment to climate action. Collaborating with Brazil, whose president has expressed interest in strengthening ties with China, could further bolster China’s position as a key player in the global climate arena.
