The murder trial of Karen Read took a new turn on Wednesday as Yale-educated brain surgeon Dr. Aizik Wolf testified that John O’Keefe died from falling backwards and hitting his head on frozen ground. The 46-year-old O’Keefe was allegedly killed by Read, his then-girlfriend, who is accused of hitting him with her 2021 Lexus SUV and leaving him to die in a blizzard in Canton, Massachusetts.

Dr. Wolf explained that the head trauma and skull fractures O’Keefe suffered, combined with hypothermia from the cold, would not have killed him immediately. The force of impact from falling backwards caused a classic blunt-trauma injury, resulting in fractures and swelling in his brain. Despite the severity of his injuries, O’Keefe’s body temperature dropped significantly before he was found by paramedics, further complicating his chances of survival.

The testimony from Dr. Wolf shed light on the nature of O’Keefe’s injuries and the potential timeline of events leading to his death. The prosecution is using this information to argue for an involuntary manslaughter charge against Read, alleging that her actions, intentional or not, contributed to O’Keefe’s demise.

The trial also featured testimony from Massachusetts State Police crime lab technician Christina Hanley, who analyzed glass and plastic fragments found at the scene. While some evidence linked the materials to Read’s Lexus, there were discrepancies in matching specific debris to the broken cocktail glass and taillight fragments recovered.

The defense raised questions about the origin of the injuries sustained by O’Keefe, suggesting that there may have been other factors at play besides the alleged vehicular incident. The trial continues to unravel the events leading to O’Keefe’s death, with the possibility of life imprisonment looming over Read if convicted of second-degree murder, drunken driving, manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a deadly accident.

The intricate details presented in court paint a complex picture of the tragedy, leaving the jury to piece together the evidence and determine the truth behind O’Keefe’s untimely demise. The case remains a high-profile legal battle, with both sides presenting compelling arguments in pursuit of justice for the victim and accountability for the accused.
