Conservation workers are working tirelessly to protect a group of precious Australian animals following devastating floods in New South Wales that have claimed the lives of four people.

Species such as Tasmanian devils, brush-tailed rock wallabies, eastern quolls, long-nosed potoroos, and broad-toothed rats are all housed within the secure confines of the 400-hectare Aussie Ark sanctuary in Barrington Tops, New South Wales. This sanctuary serves as a safeguard for these animals against feral predators and plays a crucial role in preserving their populations in case of extinction in the wild.

Over the years, the sanctuary has seen the successful breeding of 500 Tasmanian devil joeys, with approximately 50 of them already reintroduced into protected wild habitats. Plans are in place to release more of these animals outside the sanctuary to help reestablish Tasmanian devil populations on the Australian mainland.

However, recent severe weather conditions, including record-breaking rainfall and storms, have wreaked havoc on the sanctuary. Flash flooding caused significant damage to the fencing that keeps feral animals out, putting the lives of the sanctuary’s resident animals at risk.

Tim Faulkner at Aussie Ark reported that many animals had to be relocated to an emergency center within the sanctuary due to the flooding. The most pressing issue now is the extensive damage to a kilometer of the perimeter fence, leaving the sanctuary vulnerable to potential breaches by feral animals.

Despite the challenges, Faulkner’s team has been vigilant in monitoring the damaged sections of the fence to prevent any escapes or intrusions. Thankfully, no native species have been reported missing, and no feral animals have breached the sanctuary.

Reflecting on the devastation caused by the floods, Faulkner expressed concern for the wildlife outside the sanctuary that may have also been affected by the natural disaster.

The sanctuary continues to face challenges as they work to repair the damaged fences and ensure the safety of their precious animal residents. Despite the setbacks, the dedication of the conservation team remains unwavering as they strive to protect and preserve Australia’s unique wildlife.
