Malcolm Harris (Chicago Police Department)

The man charged with attempted murder of a Chicago police officer was on felony pretrial release in DuPage County

Malcolm Harris, aged 40, was arrested this week for allegedly trying to kill a Chicago police officer by striking the cop with his car during a traffic stop. Court records show that Harris was already on felony pretrial release in DuPage County at the time of the incident.

The incident occurred when the officer, who had been on the force for nearly two years, stopped Harris in an alley behind the 4700 block of West Madison on May 3. Despite attempts to drive away from the stop, CPD units managed to box him in.

According to prosecutors, as the police officers approached Harris’ 1987 Chevy truck on foot, he accelerated the vehicle into the officer, dragging him against a fence and the ground.

Judge James Murphy III stated in a detention petition that prosecutors suspect Harris of having a firearm during the traffic stop, which he allegedly passed to another individual. Despite this, Harris was only apprehended this week and is not facing charges related to possessing the weapon.

Malcolm Harris is currently facing charges of attempted murder of a peace officer and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Records from DuPage County reveal that Harris was already on pretrial release for a pending identity theft case at the time of the incident.

Editor’s note: Due to the pending identity theft charges in a different county, Malcolm Harris will not be included in CWBChicago’s list of individuals charged with violent offenses while on felony bond. However, he will be listed as a “dishonorable mention.”
