With Memorial Day weekend upon us, AAA predicts a whopping 45.1 million people will hit the road, with 39.4 million opting for a car journey. It’s bound to be a busy one, so stay safe out there!

In the world of deals, lidar startup Luminar is making moves to secure additional capital through a deal with Yorkville Advisors Global. This move comes amidst a recent CEO change and restructuring within the company.

Elsewhere, SparkCharge, a provider of “charging-as-a-service” for fleets, secured $15.5 million in a Series A-1 round, while Cairo-based startup Sylndr raised $15.7 million as it expands into auto financing and dealer tools. And for those in the market for hydrogen trucks, Nikola’s assets are up for auction following its bankruptcy filing earlier this year.

In the realm of autonomous vehicles, Aurora has introduced human “observers” in its self-driving trucks at the request of partner PACCAR, leaving many questioning the purpose. Meanwhile, Einride’s CEO is stepping down, and Reliable Robotics has appointed a new CFO with ties to Apple.

On the electric vehicles front, Arc has unveiled the Arc Coast electric boat, while Senate Republicans have voted to overturn California’s waiver for stricter air pollution standards. And in the gig economy, Uber is set to launch a B2B logistics service in India through a partnership with a government-backed nonprofit.

AI is also making waves, with Uber Freight rolling out a suite of AI features to shippers worldwide, and CEO Lior Ron sharing insights on the company’s foray into AI technology.
