Disney+ has officially announced that popular children’s nursery rhyme program, “Cocomelon,” will be making its way to their streaming platform after Netflix opted not to renew its license. This news comes as a significant shift for the show, which first joined Netflix in 2020.

According to reports from Variety, “Cocomelon” will begin streaming on Disney+ in 2027. The decision to move the show was influenced by a decline in viewership on Netflix, with a reported 60% decrease from the first half of 2023 to the second half of 2024. Nielsen data also shows a noticeable drop in traffic for the program. In 2024, “Cocomelon” failed to make it into Netflix’s top 10 most-watched shows, a stark contrast to its No. 5 ranking in 2023.

While “Cocomelon” will be leaving Netflix, other shows from producer Moonbug Entertainment, such as “Cocomelon Lane” and “Blippi,” will continue to be available on the platform. Netflix highlighted the success of “Cocomelon Lane” Season 1, which garnered over 50 million views in the second half of 2024, surpassing the viewership of any season of “Cocomelon.” Children’s and family programming plays a significant role in Netflix’s content strategy, accounting for 15% of their total viewership.

The addition of “Cocomelon” will further enhance Disney+’s already strong lineup of children’s shows. The streaming platform currently boasts the top three most-streamed shows for preschool kids, including “Bluey,” “Spidey and His Amazing Friends,” and “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.” With “Cocomelon” entering the mix at No. 6, Disney+ will now have four out of the top 10 most-streamed shows for kids aged two to five.

Originally gaining popularity on YouTube, where it has amassed over 190 million subscribers and 200 billion views, “Cocomelon” has become a household name in children’s entertainment. The move to Disney+ signals a new chapter for the beloved program and its young audience.

In addition to the shift to Disney+, Moonbug Entertainment has experienced other changes recently, including a workforce reduction of around 5% in November. This move primarily impacted employees in Los Angeles and London, reflecting broader shifts within the company.

Overall, the move of “Cocomelon” to Disney+ marks a significant change in the streaming landscape for children’s programming. With its established fan base and widespread appeal, the show is poised to find continued success on its new platform.
