Pope Leo XIV Reflects on Vincent van Gogh’s “Sower at Sunset”

In his first general audience on Wednesday, May 21, Pope Leo XIV referenced Vincent van Gogh’s iconic painting “Sower at Sunset” (1888) to delve into the biblical Parable of the Sower. Addressing a crowd of around 40,000 people at Saint Peter’s Square in the Vatican, the Pope used the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter’s artwork to convey his reflections on the spiritual teachings found in the Gospel of Matthew.

Van Gogh’s masterpiece captures a serene moment during the golden hour, with a farmer sowing seeds in a field of wheat as the sun sets in the background. The Pope drew parallels between the lush crop depicted in the painting and the message of hope conveyed in the Parable of the Sower.

The Parable of the Sower, as narrated in the Gospel of Matthew, illustrates Jesus sharing a story with the crowd about a farmer scattering seeds on different types of soil. Through various interpretations, the parable explores the concept of spiritual growth and the challenges that individuals face in receiving and nurturing the word of God.

During his address, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of understanding the message behind the parable, highlighting the significance of nurturing one’s faith in a world filled with distractions and challenges. He also touched upon the symbolic elements present in van Gogh’s painting, such as the role of God in shaping history and the theme of divine providence.

Appointed as the first North American Supreme Pontifex on May 8, Pope Leo XIV has inherited a legacy of promoting art, artists, and accessibility within the Vatican. With a deep appreciation for the intersection of faith and art, the Pope continues to inspire and engage with audiences through his thoughtful reflections on spiritual matters.
