If you’re interested in staying up to date on what Trump’s second term means for Washington, business, and the world, look no further than the White House Watch newsletter. This newsletter provides valuable insights and analysis on the latest developments in US politics and international relations.

Several EU governments have recently expressed a desire to reach a quick deal with the US in order to avoid the threat of 50 per cent tariffs on the bloc. Leaders from countries such as Italy, France, Spain, Ireland, and Belgium have urged the European Commission to continue negotiations with Washington rather than resorting to confrontation.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been instrumental in facilitating communication between the US and the EU. Following a conversation with President Trump, Meloni reached out to commission president Ursula von der Leyen to emphasize the importance of resolving differences through dialogue.

Von der Leyen was able to persuade President Trump to postpone the implementation of increased tariffs until July 9, following discussions with several EU leaders. The decision to accelerate talks and avoid a trade war has been welcomed by countries like France, Spain, Ireland, and Belgium.

In an effort to defuse tensions, Meloni has proposed a summit between leaders of major EU economies, top commission officials, and the US president next month. Trump’s upcoming visit to the Netherlands for the Nato summit presents an opportunity for further discussions.

French President Emmanuel Macron has praised the positive exchange between Trump and von der Leyen, expressing hope for a resolution that benefits both sides. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares and Irish counterpart Simon Harris have also emphasized the importance of reaching a deal to protect jobs and investment.

The European Commission is fast-tracking negotiations with the US, with trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič scheduled to speak with commerce secretary Howard Lutnick. Member states have approved a package of tariffs on US goods, which will be implemented on July 14 if a deal is not reached.

Overall, the efforts to de-escalate tensions and prioritize dialogue over confrontation have been well-received by leaders on both sides of the Atlantic.
