The arrival of the first warm rays of sunshine after a long, cold winter always ignites a desire within me to refresh my wardrobe and start anew. However, constantly buying new clothes is not sustainable, both for the environment and my wallet. This year, I have discovered a styling trick that satisfies this urge without breaking the bank – the scarf skirt.
Celebrities have been embracing the scarf skirt trend, using silk scarves to create unique and stylish looks. Chloë Sevigny was one of the first to rock this trend, wearing a Vaquera scarf slung around her hip with an asymmetrical hem, showing off plenty of leg. Others, like Alexa Chung and Alessandra Ambrosio, have opted to wear their scarves over trousers for a more layered look.
In London, Alexa Chung elevated a simple white tee and gray trousers by adding a brown Gucci scarf around her waist. Similarly, Alessandra Ambrosio added a pop of color to her all-white outfit by draping a pale pink printed silk scarf over her waist while arriving at the Nice Airport for the Cannes Film Festival.
The scarf skirt trend has also gained popularity among the Vogue editorial staff. I personally love to add a colorful silk scarf to break up an all-black outfit. My colleague, Laia Garcia-Furtado, draws inspiration from Alanis Morissette’s iconic style, using scarves to channel a bohemian vibe. She describes them as a more low-key way to wear a skirt or dress over pants, adding a touch of creativity to any outfit.
For those feeling uninspired by their summer wardrobe, a scarf skirt is a versatile and budget-friendly option to breathe new life into your style. So, next time you’re feeling stuck in a fashion rut, consider adding a scarf skirt to your ensemble for a fresh and fashionable look.
