Samoa’s Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa has made the decision to dissolve parliament and call for an early election following the defeat of her government’s 2025 Budget.

After losing the crucial budget vote, Fiame, who has been leading a minority government since being ousted from her former FAST party in January, acknowledged the defeat on Tuesday morning.

A coalition of MPs from both the opposition Human Rights Protection Party and Fiame’s former FAST party voted against the budget, resulting in a final tally of 34 against, 16 in favor, and 2 abstentions.

This move comes amidst a period of political unrest that began earlier this year with a split within the FAST Party, leading to Fiame’s removal of FAST Party chairman La’auli Leuatea Schmidt and other FAST ministers from her Cabinet.

Despite facing challenges to her leadership, including two unsuccessful no-confidence votes, Fiame remained determined to complete her term and uphold her minority government.

During her visit to Aotearoa, Fiame highlighted the challenges facing the Pacific region in terms of geopolitics and expressed her commitment to fulfilling her responsibilities as Prime Minister.

While acknowledging the possibility of an early election, Fiame noted that logistical issues, such as ongoing voter re-registration, could pose challenges to an immediate electoral process.

As Samoa prepares for a potential early election, the political landscape remains uncertain, with Fiame’s leadership and the future of the government hanging in the balance.
