73 arrested in Seaside Heights during Memorial Day weekend mayhem

Seaside Heights faced a tumultuous Memorial Day weekend as a series of stabbings and fights led to the closure of the beloved boardwalk and the subsequent arrest of over 70 individuals, including 21 minors. The chaos unfolded over a 72-hour period, beginning early Friday and culminating around 6 a.m. on Monday.

Despite efforts to prevent any issues following a similar outbreak of violence during last year’s holiday weekend, law enforcement officers found themselves arresting 52 adults and 21 juveniles during the weekend. Three young men were stabbed within close proximity to the famous boardwalk, but they refused to cooperate with investigators, resulting in no arrests being made in connection to the stabbings.

Police Chief Thomas Boyd took a proactive approach to public safety by temporarily closing the two-mile boardwalk, which boasts amusement piers, arcades, and other attractions, after the third stabbing incident. The closure duration was unspecified.

Among the arrested individuals was a 21-year-old man from Beachwood, charged with possession of a firearm, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, resisting arrest, and obstruction following a fight reported via a 911 call. Additionally, a pedestrian in Seaside Park was struck by a car and airlifted to a hospital amidst the chaos.

Seaside Heights estimated around 100,000 visitors over the Memorial Day weekend, with reports of unruly behavior reminiscent of the “Jersey Shore” show. To prevent a recurrence of last year’s mayhem, an additional 100 police officers were deployed this year.

Borough officials had a contingency plan in place, including the involvement of outside law enforcement, if the crowds, particularly teenagers and young adults, became rowdy. Last year, dozens were arrested, including a 15-year-old who was stabbed during a brawl on the boardwalk, leading to a brief closure due to reports of “civil unrest” and alleged gunfire.

The events over Memorial Day weekend in Seaside Heights serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by popular tourist destinations in managing large crowds and ensuring public safety during peak holiday periods.
