The latest episode of “The Challenge” may have left viewers on the edge of their seats, but the drama doesn’t stop there. During the recent installment of “Battle of the Eras,” fans witnessed Derrick Kosinski and Horacio Gutiérrez Jr. go head-to-head in a grueling elimination round that ended in controversy.
Host TJ Lavin declared Derrick as the winner of the intense competition, which involved inserting 40 pegs into a wall while enduring a physical challenge. However, following the episode, Horacio claimed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he had actually placed all his pegs correctly while Derrick had not. He also alleged that production had assisted Derrick by picking up pegs that fell out of the wall and putting them back in. Footage seemingly supported Horacio’s claims, showing Derrick with an empty hole on his wall where two pegs were improperly placed. Additionally, Horacio mentioned that his progress was hindered when his ball got stuck on the platform, causing him to fall behind.
In response to the mounting controversy, producers organized a Zoom call with Derrick and Horacio to address the situation. The two competitors were shown raw footage of the rules being explained and the entire competition. Derrick later disclosed on the “Challenge Mania” podcast that this was an unprecedented move by the show’s producers after receiving negative feedback.
During the podcast, Horacio admitted his mistake, stating that he had misunderstood a crucial rule about the pegs falling off the wall. The footage confirmed that once a peg was placed, it counted regardless of whether it fell off later. This revelation clarified that production’s actions of picking up Derrick’s pegs did not impact the outcome of the competition.
The Zoom call also included a viewing of the raw footage of the elimination, showcasing nine different camera angles capturing every moment of the intense showdown. Ultimately, Derrick emerged as the victor, winning by a mere 13 seconds. The decision was based on precise timing, with Horacio acknowledging that Derrick’s lead was a result of minor delays in his own performance.
