Yuge Zhou, a Chicago-based artist, has created an awe-inspiring digital video collage installation titled “Trampoline Color Exercise.” This monumental piece features gymnasts performing intricate flips and twists on pink trampolines, their movements abstracted into a mesmerizing display of color and shape.

Zhou, originally from China, often explores themes of separation, loyalty, and cultural contrasts in her work. During the pandemic, she started her series of “Moon Drawings” as a way to cope with the distance between her Midwest home and her family in Beijing.

In “Trampoline Color Exercise,” Zhou delves into the role of colors as national symbols by incorporating archival Olympics footage of gymnasts wearing primary colors reminiscent of global national flags. The constantly shifting colors reflect the ever-changing geopolitical landscape of our world.

According to Zhou, the work is a celebration of globalization and a contemplation of allegiance, especially poignant in today’s politically divided world. The installation will be showcased on 92 electronic billboards in New York City’s Times Square as part of the Midnight Moment series, allowing visitors to experience the three-minute video every night in June.
