A tragic incident unfolded in the Bronx late last month when a 28-year-old man, Daoud Marji, was fatally shot while meeting a friend from out of town. The suspect, a 13-year-old boy, turned himself in to authorities and is facing charges of second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, and criminal use of a firearm in connection with the shooting.

Daoud, a plumber’s apprentice from Yonkers, was not the intended target of the shooting. A 33-year-old woman was also injured in the incident, being struck in the hip during the gunfire. The motive behind the violence and the intended target of the young teen’s actions remain unclear at this time.

The tragic event took place at University Avenue and West Kingsbridge Road, where Daoud was meeting his friend from Detroit. He was struck in the head by a single bullet and was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Daoud’s father, Saed Marji, expressed his devastation over the loss of his son, mentioning that he had warned him about the area’s reputation.

The arrest of the alleged teen shooter came shortly after Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch criticized policies such as the “Raise the Age” initiatives, which she believes have created a lenient environment for youth involved in criminal activities. Tisch highlighted the surge in youth violence since the implementation of these laws in 2019 and called for a reevaluation of the criminal justice system’s approach to handling young offenders.

This tragic incident was not an isolated one, as another innocent New Yorker, Excenia Mette, a beloved bodega owner from Harlem, was also fatally shot in a separate incident the day before. The senseless violence plaguing the city has left the community reeling and calling for stricter measures to address the escalating gun violence.

As the legal proceedings unfold for the suspects involved in these tragic events, the city grapples with the devastating impact of gun violence on innocent bystanders. The need for comprehensive solutions to address youth violence and gun-related crimes has become more urgent than ever in the wake of these heartbreaking incidents.
