Amazon to License New York Times Editorial Content for AI Training

The New York Times has reached an agreement with Amazon to license its editorial content for the tech giant’s AI platforms. This comes nearly two years after The Times filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement.

The deal will allow Amazon to incorporate Times editorial content into various customer experiences, including news articles, content from NYT Cooking, and The Athletic. Additionally, Amazon may use the content for its Alexa software on smart speakers.

While the terms of the agreement were not disclosed, this marks Amazon’s first such licensing deal with a major publisher. In contrast, OpenAI has previously signed similar agreements with publishers like The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and The Guardian.

For The New York Times, this agreement signifies a shift towards generative AI-focused licensing arrangements. This decision comes following the outlet’s accusations against OpenAI and Microsoft for using its articles without permission or compensation to train AI models.

Both OpenAI and Microsoft have denied any wrongdoing in relation to the use of The Times’s content. JS has reached out to The New York Times for further details on the licensing agreement with Amazon.
