Decaf Coffee: The Surprising Benefits for Habitual Drinkers

For many people, starting the day with a hot cup of coffee is a must. But what if that cup was decaffeinated? Surprisingly, recent research suggests that decaf coffee may have similar effects on the brain and body as regular coffee with caffeine.

A study conducted by researchers from Slovenia and the Netherlands compared the effects of coffee with and without caffeine on habitual coffee drinkers. The results were unexpected and shed light on the potential benefits of switching to decaf for those looking to cut down on caffeine intake due to issues like anxiety or sleep problems.

The study involved 20 healthy university students who were regular coffee drinkers. Before the study, the participants had adequate sleep and abstained from coffee and food for a specific period. They underwent baseline measurements of their brain activity and cardiovascular health before completing cognitive tests.

The participants were then divided into two groups: one received decaf coffee, while the other received coffee with added caffeine. After consuming their respective beverages, the participants underwent further tests to assess their cognitive performance and physical responses.

The results showed that both groups experienced similar changes in cognitive function and physiological responses after consuming coffee, regardless of caffeine content. While the caffeine group showed slightly more improvement in reaction times, the placebo group also demonstrated significant changes.

The researchers noted that the anticipation of consuming coffee could play a significant role in how the brain and body respond, even in the absence of caffeine. This suggests that our expectations of the morning ritual of drinking coffee may influence its effects.

Overall, the study findings suggest that decaf coffee can mimic the cognitive and physiological effects of regular coffee in habitual drinkers. This indicates that the benefits of coffee consumption may not solely be attributed to caffeine but also to the ritual and expectation associated with it.

The research, published in the journal Heliyon, highlights the potential benefits of switching to decaf for those looking to reduce their caffeine intake while still enjoying the ritual of a morning cup of coffee.
