The trade talks between the United States and China have hit a roadblock, prompting the need for direct communication between the leaders of both countries. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed in an interview with Fox News that the discussions have stalled, necessitating further engagement at the highest levels.

Bessent expressed optimism that more talks would take place in the coming weeks, with the possibility of a call between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Following escalating trade tensions, a breakthrough agreement was reached in Switzerland on May 12, leading to a temporary rollback of tariff increases for 90 days. However, issues persist, with the U.S. imposing tech restrictions on Beijing and China failing to ease restrictions on rare earths as expected.

The complexity of the negotiations requires the involvement of both leaders, according to Bessent, who emphasized the importance of Trump and Xi weighing in on the discussions. While Trump has expressed a desire to speak with Xi, China is likely to proceed cautiously, seeking assurances that there will be no surprises during the call.

Communication between the two countries has continued since the agreement in Switzerland, with Chinese Ministry of Commerce Spokesperson He Yongqian addressing concerns over chip export controls. China urged the U.S. to correct its practices and uphold the consensus reached during the talks in Geneva. Regarding rare earths’ export controls, He emphasized China’s commitment to international norms and regional stability.

In a separate development, the Trump administration announced plans to revoke visas for Chinese students, a move criticized by China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning as unjustified and based on ideological and national security concerns.

As the trade negotiations face challenges, it is clear that direct engagement between the leaders of the U.S. and China is crucial to resolving differences and moving forward in a constructive manner. Stay tuned for further developments as both countries navigate these complex issues.
