Exploring the Past:

On this day in 1921, Tulsa, Oklahoma, witnessed a tragic two-day massacre where white mobs attacked the affluent Black district of Greenwood following reports of a Black man allegedly assaulting a white woman. The violence resulted in the deaths of as many as 300 Black Tulsans.

Other Notable Events:

Back in 1790, President George Washington signed the first U.S. copyright act into law, setting a significant precedent for intellectual property protection.

In 1889, a devastating disaster struck Johnstown, Pennsylvania, claiming over 2,200 lives after the South Fork Dam collapsed, unleashing a massive flood.

Fast forward to 1949, Alger Hiss, a former State Department official accused of espionage, faced trial in New York on perjury charges, marking a pivotal moment in Cold War history.

1970 witnessed a powerful magnitude 7.9 earthquake hitting the Ancash region of Peru, leading to a tragic loss of approximately 67,000 lives due to the ensuing landslide.

In 1977, the completion of the Trans-Alaska oil pipeline marked a major milestone in the energy industry after three years of construction.

Jumping to 2005, the identity of “Deep Throat,” the Watergate scandal informant, was revealed as former FBI official W. Mark Felt by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein.

In 2009, Millvina Dean, the last survivor of the RMS Titanic sinking in 1912, passed away in Hampshire, England at the age of 97.

Fast forward to 2014, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the only American soldier held captive in Afghanistan, was released by the Taliban in exchange for five Afghan detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

In 2019, a tragic incident unfolded in Virginia Beach as a city employee opened fire in a municipal building, resulting in the loss of 12 lives before being stopped by law enforcement.
