When faced with the challenge of building a home on a limited lot surrounded by wetlands and subject to FEMA flooding protections, landscape architect Brooks rose to the occasion. She carefully considered the topography and environmental factors to create a plan that would not only thrive in the harsh coastal conditions but also provide beautiful outdoor spaces for the homeowners to enjoy.

The design of the garden was crucial, as only the most native plants would be able to withstand the salt winds and deer that frequented the area. Brooks chose a mix of viburnum, privet, Baccharis, pines, native cherries, red cedar, and Ilex opaca to line the perimeter of the property. Espaliered plane trees shielded the garage, while pleached shrubs added structure near the pool. A small outdoor courtyard, or “orchard,” was created between the main living room and a poolside pavilion, providing a cozy space to relax and enjoy the surrounding landscape.

As I walked through the garden, I could see that it was still in its early stages of growth. The dunes leading down to the beach were planted with beach grass, and Brooks mentioned that there may be some turnover in the next few years as the plants settle into their new environment. However, there was a sense of balance and harmony in the garden, with unexpected touches like white hydrangeas in weathered terra-cotta pots adding a unique twist to the traditional Long Island landscape.

One corner of the garden, affectionately referred to as “Julie’s Garden,” stood out as a favorite spot. Shaded by a pergola, this area was intricately seeded with a variety of sun-loving perennials, creating a colorful and inviting space for both humans and pollinators alike. The mix of yarrow, echinacea, eryngium, liatris, monarda, asters, and Perovskia created a vibrant display that was sure to attract bees and butterflies throughout the season.

Overall, Brooks’ careful attention to detail and thoughtful design choices had transformed a challenging lot into a beautiful and functional outdoor space. By working with the natural landscape and choosing appropriate plantings, she had created a garden that not only survived but thrived in the coastal environment. It was clear that her expertise had truly made a difference in creating a unique and inviting outdoor oasis for the homeowners to enjoy for years to come.
