John Pai, a renowned artist with a career spanning over seventy years, has explored a wide range of themes in his artistic practice. From memory and the subconscious to international art forms, East Asian philosophy, and science, Pai’s work is a testament to his diverse influences and interests. In the early 1960s, he began working with steel, delving into its technical and aesthetic potential through abstract shapes inspired by Constructivism.

Pai is best known for his meticulous metal sculptures, which involve welding thin strips in intricate lattices and sheets to create delicate woven textures. Transforming a material typically associated with heavy-duty construction, Pai’s sculptures exude a sense of lightness and elegance, almost appearing as if they could float on air. The soft curves and gauzy surfaces of his work evoke organic forms or textiles, offering a unique juxtaposition to the industrial nature of steel.

His solo exhibition, “Shared Destinies,” at Gallery Hyundai features nearly 40 pieces created by Pai over the past seven decades. The exhibition includes welded steel sculptures, drawings, and paintings, showcasing the artist’s multidisciplinary approach to material, process, and form.

One of the standout pieces in the exhibition is “Shared Destinies,” where layers of delicately welded steel resemble a woven basket. Another work, “Invocation,” calls to mind the flowing, woven wire sculptures of Ruth Asawa. These ethereal pieces reveal inner structures that mirror universal layers of the human psyche, time, and Pai’s personal journey of self-exploration.

“Shared Destinies” will be on display at Gallery Hyundai in Seoul until October 20. To learn more about the exhibition and Pai’s work, visit the gallery’s website.

Overall, John Pai’s intricate and detailed metal sculptures offer a unique perspective on the potential of steel as a medium for artistic expression. Through his exploration of form, texture, and structure, Pai invites viewers to contemplate the intersection of art, nature, and the human experience.
