Crystal Palace at risk of being expelled from Europa League as club officials prepare to hold emergency talks with UEFA: Reports

Crystal Palace, a Premier League side, is facing the risk of being expelled from the UEFA Europa League for the upcoming season. The club is among the eight English teams that have qualified for European competition but may now find themselves excluded from participating in the Europa League.

Reports from the Daily Mail suggest that Palace’s potential expulsion is due to UEFA’s regulations on multi-club ownership. The club officials are scheduled to meet with UEFA in Switzerland to discuss their situation and hope for a favorable resolution.

Crystal Palace earned their spot in the Europa League by securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final last month. However, their ownership by American businessman John Textor, who holds a 43% stake in the club, has raised concerns.

Textor also owns Olympique Lyon, another club that has qualified for the Europa League after finishing sixth in Ligue 1. UEFA prohibits multiple teams owned by the same individual or entity from competing in the same tournament, leading to the potential expulsion of one of the clubs. Palace is likely to be the one facing the axe due to their lower 12th-place finish in the English league compared to Lyon’s sixth-place finish in France.

While Palace could have been relegated to the Europa Conference League, another one of their owners, David Blitzer, owns Brondby, a Danish club that finished third in their league and is in the playoffs for the Conference League, making it impossible for Palace to take their spot.

In order to secure their place in the Europa League, Crystal Palace must convince UEFA that Textor’s ownership has limited influence. It is reported that Textor only holds 25% of the voting rights at Selhurst Park, with Blitzer, Steve Parish, and Josh Harris each owning 25% as well.

Participating in the Europa League for the first time in their history in the 2025-26 season is crucial for Crystal Palace. The competition would provide a significant financial boost and help attract high-quality players during the summer transfer window.

In other news, Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze. Spurs, looking to strengthen their squad after securing Champions League qualification, are considering triggering Eze’s £68 million release clause or exploring a cash-plus-player swap deal.

Eberechi Eze, who has two years remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, had an impressive season, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists across all competitions. His potential move to Tottenham could be a significant development in the summer transfer market.

As Crystal Palace navigates through the uncertainty surrounding their Europa League participation, the club will be closely monitoring the outcome of their meeting with UEFA. The decision will have far-reaching implications for their future in European competition and the team’s ability to compete at the highest level.
