The Great Lakes have a long and tragic history of claiming lives and ships, with estimates suggesting that around 25-30,000 people have drowned on approximately 6,000 vessels since the 17th century. While the exact number will never be known, one of the most documented shipwrecks is that of the Lady Elgin. On September 8, 1860, this sidewheel steamer collided with another boat on Lake Michigan, resulting in the death of over 300 people and becoming one of the deadliest maritime disasters in the region.

Despite the passage of almost 165 years, a remarkable artifact from the Lady Elgin has resurfaced—a solid gold pocket watch that belonged to one of the victims. This particular victim, Herbert Ingram, was a notable figure in his own right, known as the father of pictorial journalism. Born in 1811 in England, Ingram started his career as a printer’s apprentice and later gained success with his publication, The Illustrated London News, which revolutionized journalism by including illustrations in every issue.

Tragically, Herbert Ingram, along with one of his sons, perished in the Lady Elgin shipwreck while gathering material for his publication in the United States. It wasn’t until 129 years later that the wreck of the Lady Elgin was rediscovered by maritime archaeologists, leading to the recovery of the gold pocket watch by a group of divers. After being hidden away for over 30 years, the watch was restored and its owner identified through the initials “H.I.” engraved on it.

Further research revealed that Herbert Ingram’s descendants still resided in England, and the watch was returned to them, coinciding with the construction of an exhibit dedicated to him in his hometown of Boston, Lincolnshire. The artifact now serves as a tangible reminder of both historical triumphs and tragedies, symbolizing the enduring impact of shipwrecks on individuals and families.

The return of the watch has been described as the right thing to do, emphasizing the importance of remembering and honoring those who lost their lives in maritime disasters like the Lady Elgin. It serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of such tragedies and the significance of preserving and commemorating the stories of those who perished. Title: The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health

In recent years, the rise of social media has drastically changed the way we communicate, connect, and share information. While social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok have revolutionized the way we interact with one another, there has been growing concern about the impact of social media on mental health.

One of the most significant ways in which social media affects mental health is through comparison. Studies have shown that people often compare themselves to others on social media, leading to feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, and low self-esteem. The curated and often idealized versions of people’s lives that are presented on social media can create unrealistic expectations and cause individuals to feel like they are not measuring up.

Moreover, constant exposure to filtered images, edited photos, and highlight reels can create a distorted view of reality, leading to feelings of dissatisfaction with one’s own life. This phenomenon, known as “social media envy,” can contribute to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

Additionally, the addictive nature of social media can also have negative consequences on mental health. The constant need to check notifications, likes, and comments can lead to feelings of FOMO (fear of missing out) and anxiety when not actively engaging with social media platforms. This excessive use of social media has been linked to poor sleep quality, decreased productivity, and increased feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Furthermore, cyberbullying and online harassment are prevalent issues on social media platforms that can have a devastating impact on mental health. The anonymity of the internet can embolden individuals to engage in hurtful behavior, leading to feelings of shame, embarrassment, and fear in the victims. Cyberbullying has been linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation in young people, highlighting the need for increased awareness and prevention efforts.

Despite these negative effects, social media can also have positive impacts on mental health. For some individuals, social media provides a sense of community, support, and connection with others who share similar experiences. Online mental health communities and resources can offer valuable support and information to individuals struggling with mental health issues, reducing feelings of isolation and stigma.

In conclusion, the impact of social media on mental health is complex and multifaceted. While social media has the potential to negatively affect mental health through comparison, addiction, and cyberbullying, it can also provide valuable support and resources to individuals in need. It is essential for individuals to be mindful of their social media use, set boundaries, and prioritize their mental well-being in an increasingly digital world. Additionally, social media platforms should take responsibility for promoting positive mental health practices and creating safe and inclusive online environments for all users.
