Exciting upgrades are in store for Halswell Quarry Park, with plans for a fenced dog exercise area, new walking paths, and additional trees. The park, a beloved community space in Christchurch, is set to undergo improvements to better cater to the needs of its visitors, especially those with furry friends.

Rupert Bool, the head of parks at Christchurch City Council, expressed the importance of these enhancements. He noted the growing popularity of the park’s dog exercise area and the community’s feedback on improving dog management within the space. Currently, there are no fenced areas in the southwest for off-leash dog exercise, prompting the proposal to create a dedicated and controlled environment for dogs to play safely.

The planned fenced area will be expanded to encompass the lower field and a new section towards Kennedys Bush Road. Additionally, the park will allocate space for native forest planting and introduce two new walking tracks – one within the dog exercise area and an extension of the existing accessible track.

Feedback on these proposed improvements is welcomed until June 29th, giving the community a chance to voice their opinions. Furthermore, plans for a new dog park in southwest Christchurch are also up for consultation. As the demand for dog park facilities continues to rise alongside urban growth in the area, the council is exploring options for an additional dog park to meet the increasing need.

While suitable sites are being considered for the new dog park, residents are encouraged to share their preferences and suggestions for its features. The goal is to create a space that caters to the diverse needs of dog owners in the community. Stay tuned for more updates on these exciting developments at Halswell Quarry Park and beyond.
