A New Film in Development About Chaos at OpenAI

A movie depicting the tumultuous period at OpenAI, during which co-founder and CEO Sam Altman was fired and rehired in just five days, is reportedly in the works.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the film titled “Artificial” is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios.

Although details are still being ironed out, sources have revealed that Luca Guadagnino, known for his work on “Call Me by Your Name” and “Challengers,” is in discussions to direct the movie. The studio is eyeing Andrew Garfield to play Altman, Monica Barbaro as former CTO Mira Murati, and Yura Borisov as Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder who advocated for Altman’s removal.

Furthermore, it has been reported that “Saturday Night Live” writer Simon Rich has penned the screenplay, hinting at a comedic touch to the film. Given the inherently absurd nature of the AI world, an OpenAI comedy seems appropriate, especially considering the events that transpired two years ago.

In November 2023, Sam Altman was ousted from the AI company, stepping down from his positions as CEO and board member due to a lack of trust from the board. However, a mere five days later, following extensive discussions and negotiations, Altman was reinstated.

Regardless of the casting choices, “Artificial” promises to offer an intriguing portrayal of the drama and is likely to spark interest among audiences, particularly given the rising prominence of AI technologies like ChatGPT.
