LEGO and McLaren have once again collaborated to create a stunning full-scale replica of the iconic McLaren P1 supercar entirely out of LEGO Technic elements. The project, announced in a recent showcase, required 23 specialists from both companies to work together for a total of 8,344 hours of development and construction, followed by another 2,210 hours of production time. The end result is a bright yellow variant of the P1, consisting of 342,817 LEGO Technic elements across 393 different types, with 11 specially molded pieces created specifically for this project.

The LEGO Technic P1, a 1:8 scale model, is an impressive feat of creative engineering. It features a steel frame and real tires to function, but apart from that, all other components are made entirely of LEGO. The engine system is comprised of eight electric motor packs, each equipped with 96 LEGO Power function motors to replicate the original McLaren’s V8 engine. This homage to the P1’s legacy as the world’s first hybrid supercar weighs approximately 2,690 lbs, making it roughly 385 lbs lighter than the actual racing vehicle.

To showcase the capabilities of the LEGO Technic P1, McLaren enlisted their team racer, Lando Norris, to drive the car at the UK’s Silverstone Circuit. Norris successfully completed a full lap around the 3.66mi track at a top speed of 40 mph. While this may be a fraction of the speed of the real McLaren P1, the LEGO Technic version achieved several notable milestones, including being the first LEGO scale model to navigate corners, complete an entire race track lap, and be driven by an official Formula One racing driver.

This isn’t the first time LEGO has ventured into creating full-size racing replicas. In 2018, they introduced a drivable Bugatti Chiron made from over 1 million LEGO Technic pieces. Although significantly lighter than the actual car, the LEGO Bugatti Chiron could only reach a top speed of 12 mph and was limited to driving in a straight line.

LEGO’s partnership with McLaren continues to push the boundaries of creativity and engineering, showcasing the limitless possibilities of combining these two iconic brands. The LEGO Technic P1 stands as a testament to the innovation and craftsmanship that goes into creating these intricate models, capturing the essence of the McLaren P1 in a stunning and functional LEGO replica.
