On October 14, 2023, the United States witnessed the annual solar eclipse, a spectacular event that offered photographer Ryan Imperio a rare chance to capture the phenomenon known as Baily’s beads. These shimmering rings are formed when sunlight passes through the valleys and craters on the moon’s surface during an eclipse, creating a stunning visual effect. Imperio seized the opportunity to document the perfect half-rings from Odessa, Texas, creating a composite of around 30 images that ultimately earned him the prestigious title of the 2024 Astronomy Photographer of the Year.

The winning image, which showcases the intricate details of Baily’s beads during the third contact of an annular solar eclipse, impressed judges like Kerry-Ann Lecky Hepburn with its innovative approach to mapping the moon’s topography. The annual Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition, hosted by Royal Museums Greenwich, received over 3,500 entries from photographers in 58 countries this year. The winning images, ranging from the mesmerizing Aurora Borealis above an Icelandic mountain to the International Space Station crossing the sun, offer a captivating glimpse into the beauty and wonder of our universe.

For those in London, the top photos from this year’s competition can be viewed at the National Maritime Museum. Alternatively, you can explore some of our favorite images below:
