Dr. Bennet Omalu Urges Tua Tagovailoa to Retire After Latest Head Injury

If Dr. Bennet Omalu, the brain expert credited with the discovery of CTE, were in charge of either the NFL or the Miami Dolphins, he would force Tua Tagovailoa to retire following his latest head injury, as reported by TMZ Sports.

Omalu, the inspiration for the famous Will Smith movie “Concussion,” didn’t hold back when discussing the matter, stating that the consequences of allowing the 26-year-old quarterback back on the field after another concussion could be severe.

Specifically, Omalu warned that if Tagovailoa were to endure another significant blow to the brain, he could become “permanently incapacitated.” He questioned the decision to allow Tagovailoa to continue playing, considering the substantial risk of subsequent catastrophic and permanent brain damage.

While Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has stated that the decision is ultimately up to Tagovailoa, Omalu emphasized that if he had any affiliation with the player, he would strongly advise him to retire for his own safety.

Omalu had previously given similar advice to Tagovailoa after a significant head injury in 2022 against the Bengals. Now, he is pleading with the quarterback to take his warnings seriously this time and find another path outside of football.

As the debate over Tagovailoa’s future in the NFL continues, Omalu’s expertise and concern for the player’s well-being serve as a stark reminder of the potential long-term consequences of head injuries in football.
