Darick Benson Sentenced to 14 Years for Attempted Carjacking
Darick Benson, 22, was sentenced to 14 years on Thursday for attempting to carjack a rideshare driver at gunpoint. Benson, who was already on probation for a previous carjacking-related incident, and a juvenile female accomplice attempted the carjacking in August 2023.
On the night of the incident, Benson and the female juvenile got into the rideshare driver’s vehicle in Chicago. Benson then pulled out a gun and pointed it at the driver while the female accomplice searched his pockets. However, the driver, who had a concealed carry license, managed to jump out of the moving vehicle and fire shots at his own car.
Despite Benson returning fire, he was unable to steal the vehicle as the key fob was out of range. Both Benson and the girl fled the scene, but police were already on their way due to a ShotSpotter alert triggered by the gunfire.
Authorities found the juvenile with a minor injury nearby, while Benson was located with a gunshot wound to his leg and a firearm close by. Benson pleaded guilty to attempted vehicular hijacking with a firearm before Judge Stanley Sacks and was ordered to submit DNA to a law enforcement database.
Prior to this incident, Benson was on probation for possessing a stolen vehicle in 2021. Court records show that his probation was terminated unsatisfactorily just a month before the attempted carjacking.
