Luxembourg + Co. is a renowned gallery that has been hosting museum-quality exhibitions in New York and London since 2011. The driving force behind this prestigious gallery is the dynamic mother-daughter duo of Daniella and Alma. Their latest exhibition at their 57th Street space in Manhattan is a groundbreaking showcase that challenges our perception of René Magritte as a landscape painter.

“René Magritte: The Phantom Landscape” invites viewers to explore a different facet of the Belgian Surrealist painter’s work. Instead of focusing on his iconic imagery of pipes, bowler hats, and green apples, this exhibition delves into Magritte’s exploration of landscapes infused with psychology, fantasy, and emotion. This fresh perspective on Magritte’s artistry is a revelation, prompting acclaimed artist George Condo to remark, “Nice angle on Magritte. Nobody ever zooms in on that.”

Daniella Luxembourg, a trailblazing art dealer and collector, brings a unique vision to the art world. Her keen eye for innovation is evident in her diverse collection, which includes works by renowned artists such as Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, and Alexander Calder. Recently, she sold a significant portion of her collection at Sotheby’s in New York, making room for new acquisitions that continue to push boundaries and challenge artistic conventions.

Born in Lódz, Poland, and raised in Haifa, Israel, Luxembourg’s passion for art led her to study the history of art with a focus on early medieval Jewish art. Her unconventional approach to presenting art as a form of intellectual exploration has earned her a reputation as a tastemaker who dares to defy norms.

“The Phantom Landscape” exhibition features 14 meticulously curated works that tell a captivating three-part story. The first section, “Frames of Reference,” offers a unique perspective on outdoor views framed within the artwork. The following section, “The Sky is the Limit,” focuses on the ethereal beauty of the sky in Magritte’s landscapes. Lastly, “A Human Landscape” delves into the interconnectedness between human bodies and the natural world, showcasing the seamless blending of these elements in Magritte’s art.

Visitors to the exhibition are treated to a transformative experience as they explore Magritte’s landscapes in a new light. The airy, sixth-floor space at Luxembourg + Co. serves as the perfect backdrop for this immersive journey through the artist’s visionary works. Daniella Luxembourg’s insightful guidance through the exhibition adds another layer of depth to the viewing experience, making “The Phantom Landscape” a must-see for art enthusiasts and novices alike.
