Top Contenders in the Comedy Race at the Emmy Awards
Variety TV editors Michael Schneider and Emily Longeretta recently discussed the top contenders in the comedy race at this yearâs Emmy Awards on Varietyâs Award Circuit, presented by Paramount+.
Two major contenders in this yearâs Emmy race are âThe Bearâ and âHacks,â both of which have been past winners.
ââHacksâ was the surprise winner last year, beating out âThe Bear.â According to Schneider, âJean Smart has been winning every single year and sheâll continue to as long as that national treasure is in this category.â
Despite losing to âHacksâ last year, âThe Bearâ is expected to be a strong contender this year.
âIt has 36 nominations in the past, with 21 wins. The cast, including Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colon-Zayas, has been impressive. Creator Christopher Storer also won directing last year. While the last season may not have been as talked about, the timing of the release could work in its favor for Emmy voting,â Longeretta added.
âAbbott Elementaryâ is another show to watch out for in this yearâs race.
ââAbbott Elementaryâ continues to impress with its nominations and wins. Despite a less successful year last year, the show has consistently improved. The cast, including Quinta Brunson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tyler James Williams, and Janelle James, is outstanding and deserving of recognition,â Schneider noted.
