Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera (Chicago Police Department)

Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera Fatally Shot in the Line of Duty

Chicago Police Officer Krystal Rivera tragically lost her life after sustaining a single gunshot wound to her back, as confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office on Friday.

The incident occurred when Rivera and at least one other officer were attempting to apprehend a suspect believed to be armed in the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue around 9:50 p.m. on Thursday. The suspect fled into a nearby apartment, prompting the officers to pursue him.

Inside the apartment, the officers encountered an individual armed with a rifle, leading to a confrontation where Rivera was shot. Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling stated that the exact details of the shooting are still under investigation.

While CPD officials have not confirmed if anyone other than a police officer discharged a weapon during the incident, witnesses reported hearing a single gunshot during the altercation.

Authorities have detained several individuals in connection with the case, including one person believed to have been present when the officers confronted the armed individual in the apartment.

Following the shooting, backup officers rushed Rivera to the University of Chicago Hospital in a squad car. However, during transport, the vehicle caught fire near 59th Street and Cottage Grove, necessitating a transfer to another patrol car.

Mayor Brandon Johnson paid tribute to Rivera, highlighting her dedication to public safety and expressing condolences to her family, including her young daughter. He also commended Rivera’s partner for their courageous actions during the incident.
