Man Charged with Murder After Fatal Shooting During Conversation About Venezuelan Gangs

Yorgelder Hernandez (Chicago Police Department)

A man has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred during a conversation about Venezuelan gangs. Prosecutors allege that Yorgelder Hernandez, along with two other individuals, traveled to Racine, Wisconsin, to purchase a car on July 23, 2024. However, Hernandez was unable to afford the vehicle, so one of his companions bought it instead.

Upon returning to Chicago the following day, Hernandez, along with his accomplice, agreed to pay a third party to work on the car. The group brought the vehicle to an alley where they resided on the 6100 block of South Martin Luther King Drive. However, instead of working on the car, they began drinking.

As the night progressed, the men engaged in a conversation about Venezuelan gangs, described as “trash talk” by Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Rusch. Without any apparent argument or disagreement, Hernandez was passed a gun and proceeded to shoot one of the men, Fabian Ruiz, in the face and neck.

Following the shooting, Hernandez fled the scene in the car that Ruiz had purchased, accompanied by the individual who provided the gun. Unfortunately, Ruiz succumbed to his injuries less than 30 minutes later.

During a detention hearing, Judge Ankur Srivastava granted the petition to detain Hernandez, emphasizing that the murder was seemingly unprovoked and occurred during a trivial discussion about Venezuelan gangs.

Court records reveal that Hernandez had previous charges related to possessing counterfeit documents and an unauthorized vehicle title. He had an outstanding arrest warrant since February 10 after failing to appear in court for these charges.
