Lee (CCSO)

AirTag Leads Chicago Police to Armed Robbery Suspect

A man is facing charges of armed robbery and firearm possession after Chicago police detectives made a breakthrough in the case using technology and surveillance footage. Jonas Lee Jr., 21, was ordered detained by Judge Ankur Srivastava following a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse.

The incident began when the victim met Lee on the social media app BLK, a platform aimed at connecting individuals within the Black community. Despite the app’s promise of safety and familiarity, their in-person meeting on May 5 in the 3700 block of South Wabash took a dangerous turn.

According to prosecutors, Lee, known as “Lucky” on BLK, pulled out a firearm during their meeting and demanded the victim’s belongings, which included an iPhone, Apple Watch, AirPods, and wallet. A witness called 911 after seeing the robbery and hearing the victim’s pleas for help. Lee then attempted to use the victim’s credit cards at a gas station, but they had already been deactivated.

Chicago police were able to identify Lee’s car through surveillance footage and tracked him down as the registered owner. An AirTag belonging to the victim was found near Lee’s home, further linking him to the crime scene. Subsequent investigations revealed incriminating conversations between Lee and the victim on BLK.

Lee was apprehended at his workplace, where another firearm was found in his possession. Prosecutors stated that Lee confessed to his involvement in the robbery during police questioning. He now faces charges of armed robbery and aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon.
