Families of New Zealand citizens and residents will now have the opportunity to reunite through a new government programme that allows parents to access visas. Starting in September of this year, parents can apply for a multi-entry five-year visa, with the option to renew it once for a maximum stay of up to 10 years.

Immigration Minister Erica Stanford emphasized the importance of offering longer-term visas to migrants looking to build their lives in New Zealand. The new Parent Boost Visa aims to make the country more appealing to those wanting to call it home, while ensuring that public services are not overburdened.

To qualify for the Parent Boost visa, applicants must have an eligible sponsor who is a New Zealand citizen or resident, meet health and character requirements, have health insurance with emergency medical cover for the entire stay, and meet income requirements. They must also undergo a medical assessment after three years and have a certain amount of cash on hand.

The introduction of the Parent Boost Visa fulfills a commitment to address the backlog of parents waiting to join their adult children in New Zealand. The previous system had left thousands of parents waiting for years, with some even passing away before being able to reunite with their families.

The new visa application process will open on September 29, offering families a new opportunity to be together in New Zealand.
