Hiné Mizushima, a Vancouver-based artist, creates enchanting fiber sculptures that bring marine life to life in a whimsical and playful way. Her soft sculptures, made from felt and adorned with beads and crocheted details, offer a unique perspective on the underwater world. From octopuses perched on human hearts to moray eels slithering out of arteries, Mizushima’s creations are colorful, friendly, and even a bit glitzy.

In her upcoming solo show, “Creatures and Curiosities,” Mizushima showcases her talent for crafting intricate dioramas filled with marine creatures. One such diorama features a pair of plush blue ammonites surrounded by seagrass and bits of coral reef, all set against a vibrant blue backdrop. The attention to detail in Mizushima’s work is remarkable, with each creature carefully crafted to capture its unique characteristics.

The show will be held at Boris Zakkaten in Tokyo from September 14 to October 22, giving art enthusiasts the opportunity to marvel at Mizushima’s imaginative creations in person. For those unable to attend, Mizushima regularly shares updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses of her work on Instagram.

From pink squids to white eels and red octopuses, Mizushima’s dioramas are a celebration of the diversity and beauty of marine life. Each piece is a labor of love, showcasing Mizushima’s skill and creativity in bringing these creatures to life in a soft and tactile form.

Whether you’re a fan of fiber art, marine life, or simply appreciate the beauty of handmade creations, Mizushima’s work is sure to captivate and inspire. Visit her show in Tokyo or follow her on Instagram to stay updated on her latest creations and upcoming projects.
