The decision by President Donald Trump to deploy Marines and National Guard troops to Los Angeles has sparked a wave of criticism from military veterans and serving officers. Many have expressed concerns about the misuse of executive power and the potential risks to soldiers’ lives.

Janessa Goldbeck, a Marine Corps veteran, described the deployment as a “major shift in civilian-military norms and a dangerous precedent.” She emphasized that the military exists to defend the republic, not to serve the political ambitions of one person.

The move to send troops to protests as part of the administration’s crackdown on undocumented migrants has raised alarms about the erosion of constitutional principles. Governor Gavin Newsom of California filed a lawsuit against the president, accusing him of creating fear and terror.

Members of the National Guard, including Dylan Blaha, have also voiced misgivings about the deployment. Blaha, who is seeking a seat in Congress as a Democrat, highlighted the importance of upholding the constitution and not obeying unlawful orders.

Retired Major General Paul Eaton condemned Trump’s order as a display of presidential hubris and a misuse of executive power. He stressed the importance of avoiding the image of military forces imposing the will of executive power on the people.

The decision to federalize the California National Guard against the governor’s wishes has drawn comparisons to past instances of federal troop deployments without state consent. This move has raised concerns about states’ rights and freedom of speech.

Experts have pointed out that the deployment may violate the Posse Comitatus Act, which restricts the use of federal troops for policing purposes on domestic soil. The legal basis for sending Marines to Los Angeles remains unclear, with some suggesting that invoking the Insurrection Act may be necessary.

Lindsay Cohn, an associate professor at the US Naval War College, raised concerns about the National Guard’s role in policing civil unrest. She emphasized that the Guard is better suited for disaster response missions and may struggle to navigate the complexities of determining constitutional rights during protests.

Overall, the deployment of troops in response to civil unrest has sparked debate and raised questions about the appropriate use of military force in domestic situations. Military veterans and experts continue to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of upholding constitutional principles and respecting the role of the armed forces in a democratic society.
