Chinese streaming giant Tencent has recently struck a partnership with France-based Animation Digital Network (ADN) for the distribution of its martial arts epic series, “Blades of the Guardians.” This collaboration will see ADN gaining rights to the animated series for its subscription VOD and OTT platforms, adding to its catalog of premium global content.
The agreement between Tencent and ADN is part of Tencent Video’s broader global strategy to promote animation as a key growth driver for the platform. By actively engaging with international partners, Tencent aims to bring high-quality Chinese animation to a wider audience on a global scale.
“Blades of the Guardians,” a series three years in the making, combines stylized action sequences with cinematic storytelling inspired by the Sui and Tang dynasties. Produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures in collaboration with Coloured Pencil Animation, the series aims to blend historical accuracy with a modern artistic flair.
Adapted from a popular Chinese comic, “Blades of the Guardians” follows the journey of mercenary Dao Ma as he navigates the treacherous deserts of the Western Regions. What begins as a seemingly straightforward escort mission to Chang’an quickly spirals into a complex web of imperial intrigues, leading to a series of intense conflicts, betrayals, and revelations.
Tencent Video is a major player in China’s streaming market, offering a diverse range of content including dramas, films, variety shows, sports programs, documentaries, and animated series. With a growing collection of original animated content, Tencent is actively collaborating with top-tier studios worldwide to develop projects with global appeal. This aligns with the increasing popularity of Chinese films among international audiences, both in theaters and on streaming platforms.
The announcement of the “Blades of the Guardians” deal took place during the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival, underscoring Tencent’s commitment to promoting Chinese animation on the global stage. As Tencent continues to expand its reach and influence in the animation industry, audiences can expect more high-quality and compelling content from this innovative streaming platform.
