A group of international workers’ unions is gearing up for a protest to highlight the potential dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) in the animation industry at the Annecy Animation Festival today.

The festival, which is set to host a record-breaking 18,000 accredited guests this year, will delve into various panels and roundtable discussions focusing on the role of AI in animation. This topic has been a hotly debated issue at the French event for several years now, with numerous titles being screened that have utilized AI to varying extents during their production.

Last week, labor groups from the U.S., France, Spain, Ireland, Belgium, and other countries joined forces to release a joint statement expressing their concerns about the increasing use of AI in animation. According to the coalition, AI poses a significant threat to the artistry and integrity of their industry.

The group of organizations has called upon workers, students, and anyone who shares their apprehensions about AI in animation to gather for a public town hall meeting near the festival’s Bonlieu central hub.

In their pre-festival statement, the unions emphasized the urgent need for action in response to the widespread adoption of generative AI in the animation sector. They argued that AI, while touted as a solution to industry challenges such as layoffs and budget constraints, is actually a flawed and expensive tool that undermines creativity and jeopardizes jobs.

The unions also raised concerns about the environmental impact of AI, highlighting the increased demand for computing power, higher carbon footprints, and depletion of natural resources associated with its use. They called for the establishment of protective frameworks around AI, focusing on transparency, compensation, and informed consent.

In a call to action, the unions urged regulators, lawmakers, and governments to enact legislation that safeguards the rights of workers in the creative industry. They also called on producers, studio heads, and industry stakeholders to prioritize the well-being of workers and the integrity of their work.

The unions extended an invitation to creative workers worldwide to unite against the implementation of AI and to join them at the Annecy festival for discussions on how to defend against the negative impacts of AI in animation.

The coalition of unions, organizations, and federations behind this initiative includes SNTPCT, SPIAC-CGT, CNT, Animation Workers of Ireland, l’ABRACA, Kunstenbond, Unie Van Regisseurs, Les Intervalles, Guilde Française des Scénaristes, Syndicat des Scénaristes, SFA, SNAM, STJV, GWU Ireland, CSVI-CGT, UNI, FIA, and FIM.

This collective effort aims to raise awareness about the risks associated with AI in animation and to advocate for the protection of workers and the preservation of creative culture in the industry. Join us in our stand against the invasive use of AI in animation at the Annecy Animation Festival.
