Snap Unveils New AR Smart Glasses for Consumers

Snap is making a comeback in the world of augmented reality with the launch of its new pair of AR smart glasses, called Specs. This marks the first time in years that the company is ready to sell consumer-facing smart glasses.

During the Augmented World Expo in Long Beach, California, CEO Evan Spiegel announced that Snap will start selling the Specs to consumers in 2026. The glasses are set to ship in the same year, according to a Snap spokesperson.

The Specs will offer similar augmented reality and artificial intelligence features as the company’s developer-focused smart glasses, Spectacles 5. However, they will be smaller and lighter, making them more discreet and wearable in public settings.

Featuring see-through lenses that can display graphics to users as if they were projected in front of them, the Specs will also include an AI assistant powered by Snap’s technology, capable of processing audio and video.

This announcement comes almost a decade after Snap’s initial launch of Spectacles in 2016, which did not perform well in the market. With competition from tech giants like Meta and Google, who have also ventured into the AR glasses market, Snap is aiming to differentiate itself with its SnapOS developer ecosystem.

Meta is reportedly working on glasses with a built-in screen codenamed “Hypernova,” while Google has announced partnerships to develop its Android XR smart glasses. Snap believes that its developer community and existing AR experiences from Snapchat and Spectacles will give it an edge in the competitive AR space.

Onstage, Spiegel demonstrated some of the lenses available for Specs, showcasing features like real-time translation and recipe suggestions. These practical applications of AR technology aim to make smart glasses more appealing and useful for everyday consumers.

While Snap has not disclosed pricing or specific details about the Specs, the company also announced updates to its SnapOS platform to enhance AI capabilities and developer tools. Partnering with Niantic Spatial, Snap plans to create AI-powered maps of the world for use in AR applications.

As Snap works towards making AR glasses more accessible and functional for consumers, the success of Specs will depend on their affordability, comfort, and practicality. With competition in the market heating up, Snap is aiming to make AR glasses a mainstream device rather than just a novelty.
