Gundlach says to buy international stocks on dollar’s ‘secular decline’

Jeffrey Gundlach, the CEO of DoubleLine Capital, recently shared his insights on the global stock market during an investor webcast. Gundlach believes that international stocks will continue to outperform U.S. equities due to the dollar’s secular downtrend.

According to Gundlach, the trade strategy for investors is to focus on owning stocks outside of the United States. He emphasized that the dollar is on a path towards a secular decline, making foreign stocks an attractive investment option. Gundlach pointed out that dollar-based investors who choose to invest in foreign stocks could benefit from both a weakening dollar and the outperformance of international equities.

The weakening of the dollar in 2025, attributed to President Trump’s trade policies and a reassessment of the greenback’s global dominance, has further bolstered Gundlach’s argument for international investments. The ICE U.S. Dollar Index has already dropped by about 8% this year.

Gundlach recommended considering emerging market countries for investment opportunities, with a preference for long-term holdings in India. He also highlighted Southeast Asian countries, Mexico, and Latin America as potential options for investors.

Foreign investors’ reluctance to commit additional capital to the United States due to geopolitical tensions could also drive more investment towards international markets, creating a favorable environment for non-U.S. equities.

Gundlach, known for his bearish stance on the U.S. markets and economy, pointed out several recession indicators that are signaling potential economic challenges ahead. He predicted that the Federal Reserve would maintain interest rates at its upcoming policy meeting, despite current low inflation levels.

In terms of inflation, Gundlach estimated that it could reach around 3% by the end of 2025. However, he acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding future price pressures, particularly in light of President Trump’s unpredictable tariff policies.

Overall, Gundlach’s outlook on the global stock market underscores the importance of diversifying investments beyond U.S. equities. By considering international stocks and keeping an eye on the evolving economic landscape, investors can position themselves for potential growth opportunities in the coming months.
