Newsom Files Motion To Block Trump’s Militarization Of LA

California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) took action on Tuesday by filing an emergency order against President Donald Trump and the Department of Defense, aiming to halt what he described as the “unlawful militarization of Los Angeles.” The emergency motion seeks to prevent the deployment of federalized National Guard troops and Marines to accompany immigration enforcement officers on raids in Los Angeles.

In the filed document, it is ominously predicted that these federal forces would be used to support counter-immigration operations rather than protecting federal buildings, as claimed by Trump. The motion highlights that the activities were scheduled to commence on June 10, 2025, including securing perimeters in communities and routes for immigration enforcement officers.

Although U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer did not grant an immediate restraining order, he agreed to schedule a hearing on the matter for Thursday. In the meantime, Immigration and Customs Enforcement was seen carrying out operations as anticipated by Newsom, with National Guard soldiers providing security during arrests.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta condemned the deployment of military forces on American streets, emphasizing that local law enforcement should handle law enforcement within the borders. The filing also pointed out that the federalization of National Guard troops without the governor’s consent violates state sovereignty and could potentially allow Trump to assume control of any state militia.

The controversy surrounding the deployment of troops without prior notice to the state was further exacerbated by the sudden arrival of 2,000 National Guard members and 700 Marines in Los Angeles. This move was met with criticism from local officials, including Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell, who expressed confidence in the LAPD’s ability to manage demonstrations without military intervention.

The unfolding situation underscores the ongoing tension between state and federal authorities regarding immigration enforcement and the use of military forces within U.S. borders. Newsom’s legal challenge represents a significant pushback against what he perceives as federal overreach and a threat to state sovereignty.
