The US Army Utilizes SMASH Technology to Combat Drones

The US Army is equipping its soldiers with cutting-edge technology to effectively combat drones, known as SMASH.

During a recent live-fire training exercise in Germany, a soldier from the 3rd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment successfully targeted drones in the sky using the SMASH 2000L smart scope mounted on an M4A1 rifle.

This demonstration was part of Project Flytrap, a multinational training event aimed at enhancing military capabilities.

The SMASH 2000L, developed by Israeli company Smart Shooter Ltd., is a revolutionary smart scope that utilizes cameras, sensors, and artificial intelligence to track targets and determine the optimal time to fire.

Once a drone is locked in, the system autonomously controls the trigger and only engages when a successful hit is guaranteed.

Smart Shooter was awarded a $13 million contract by the Army to deliver these advanced scopes to troops as part of the Transformation In Contact (TIC 2.0) program, ensuring rapid deployment of new technologies to soldiers.

The lightweight smart scope, weighing about 2.5 pounds, can easily be mounted on standard-issue rifles and has already been utilized by NATO partners and tested in combat scenarios.

In conflicts such as the ongoing Ukraine war, drones are being used by both sides for reconnaissance and attacks, highlighting the importance of effective countermeasures like the SMASH technology.

Unlike traditional complex systems, SMASH enables a single soldier to effectively neutralize a drone threat without requiring additional support.

The Army’s adoption of SMASH signifies a significant advancement in drone defense capabilities, offering a more agile and efficient solution to combat this evolving threat.
