FXâs drama âShĆgunâ made history at the Primetime Emmys by breaking the record for most wins in one season. After winning 14 Creative Arts Emmys, the show extended its total wins to 18, surpassing the previous record held by HBOâs âJohn Adams.â
âShĆgunâ dominated the main acting categories, securing wins for best drama, lead actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), and lead actress (Anna Sawai).
Based on James Clavellâs novel, the series is a reimagining of the Emmy-winning 1980s miniseries set in feudal Japan. The story follows Lady Mariko (Sawai), who translates for Lord Toranaga (Sanada) and English ship captain John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) in the midst of political turmoil and impending war.
Sanada, who also produced the show, emphasized the importance of authenticity in portraying the characters and narrative. As a producer, he was able to ensure that every detail was accurate to enhance the believability of the story.
Sawai made history as the first Japanese actress to win a Primetime Emmy Award for lead actress. In an interview with Variety, she discussed the impact of her character, Lady Mariko, on viewers, especially Japanese women who resonated with her journey of empowerment and self-discovery.
